Both of our
families are supportive of our relationship.
Family support can be a
critical factor in achieving a long-lasting and happy marriage. There are a variety of reasons why some
family members and friends may not be supportive of a couple’s relationship.
Some reasons may be justified, while others may be totally unwarranted.
Some parents and in-laws
are very supportive and helpful, while others may be quite the opposite. It is best that issues such as visits over
the holidays and contact with grandchildren be addressed by a son or daughter
rather than by a son-in-law or daughter-in-law.
While it is generally a
good sign when family and friends approve of our relationship, why might some
people question it? Are there ulterior motives associated with some people’s
lack of support (e.g., possessive parent or close friend)? Are there valid reasons for concern on the
part of our loved ones (e.g., bad habits, problematic behavior)? Valid concerns need to be examined and
discussed by the couple. Unwarranted
objections are best dismissed.
